The route includes 25 points, the most important of which are Old Cairo, Maadi, Matariya, Kafr El-Sheikh, Tell Basta, Samanoud, Wadi El-Natrun, Minya, Jabal Dranka, and Al-Farma.


Cave Church - St. Simeon Altaner Monastery

This magnificent cave church (or "churches" technically - Saint Simon's monastery complex has seven churches) is unlike anything else we have in Egypt.


The main monastery hall was carved in the Mokattam hills, and with a capacity of more than 20,000 people, it was named after the Coptic Saint Simon, who moved the Mokattam mountain, according to legend, in 979 AD as evidence of the strength of his beliefs.


Built by the Zabbaleen community in the Garbage City of Cairo, the cave church is today not only a religious place but an educational center, kindergarten, and school for the deaf.


Monasteries of Wadi El-Natrun

More than 1,600 years ago, St. Macarius of Egypt decided to build a monastery for him in Wadi El-Natrun, known for its large alkaline lakes. This attracted the attention of other Christian monks and hermits, who then decided to settle in Natrun as well, and set up four large early Christian projects.


The four Coptic monasteries in Wadi El Natrun that are still active today are:


  • Saint Macarius Monastery
  • Saint Bishoy Monastery
  • Baromos Monastery
  • Syrian monastery


All four can be seen and visited even today for free, but leaving a donation always helps preserve these historic sites.


Heavenly Cathedral

This modern church was considered by some to be one of the most beautiful in the world when completed over ten years ago, and now it is an unexpected must-see for many visitors to Sharm El Sheikh.


The exterior is simple, but the interior design took a team of 19 people for two years. There are frescoes and murals, the walls depict biblical scenes such as The Creation and Exodus, and on the ceiling is Saint John's vision of the end of the world.


St. Anthony's Monastery

One of the most famous of the "Desert Fathers" was Saint Anthony, a group of Christian monks who lived in the eastern desert of Egypt in the third century.


He was wandering in the desert when he found an oasis surrounded by trees, at this spot he was later buried and his monastery built a few years later.


Today, St. Anthony's Monastery is the oldest inhabited Christian monastery in the world and is home to paintings dating from the seventh and eighth centuries, as well as 1,700 ancient documents.
